What Kind of Base is Westover Air Reserve Base?
Established during World War II and named after Major General Oscar Westover, the base has evolved, now sharing runways with Westover Metropolitan Airport. Historically, it served as a NASA Space Shuttle backup landing site until 2011 and remains vital due to its Northeast U.S. location.
Westover Air Reserve Base Housing

The Westover Air Reserve Base is nestled in the communities of Chicopee and Ludlow, near the city of Springfield. The base is a 45-minute drive from Hartford, Connecticut. The base is also roughly 2 hours from Boston. The region offers a variety of outdoor and recreational attractions including Mount Holyoke Range State Park.
Healthcare
At Westover Air Reserve Base, medical and dental exams are exclusively for Air Force Reserve personnel at a base clinic. Family members of reservists on active duty (Title 10, U.S. Code) for 30+ days can access local TRICARE-accepting hospitals or visit nearby Military Treatment Facilities: Hanscom Air Force Base in Massachusetts or Groton Naval Air Station in Connecticut.
