Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) Military Offers
An MVNO provides mobile services under its brand name without owning or managing its mobile network infrastructure. Several MVNOs offer special programs to support deployed military personnel by offering service suspensions.
The most notable of these include:
Boost Mobile/Virgin Mobile
Boost Mobile does not offer a specific and direct pricing discount for veterans, active duty military, or their families. Boost offers various ongoing discounts and deals for the general public that are worth checking out here.
However, the company allows service members deployed overseas to keep their accounts and phone numbers intact with the Deployed Military Program. There are no service charges during enrollment or reactivation fees when you restore your account.
Contact Boost Customer Care at (833) 502-6678 to enroll. You will be asked to provide your contact information and additional stateside contacts to ensure notification before your Deployed Military Program period ends. An agent will verify your eligibility and assist with enrollment.
Your account can be enrolled in Boost Mobile’s Deployed Military Program for up to 990 days.
Cricket Mobile
Cricket offers no ongoing discounts to active military, military veterans, or military reservists, but they have a Military Deployment Plan.
Cricket will hold your phone number for you for up to 36 months. Once you’re back in the US, you have up to 90 days to resubscribe to cell phone service.
You can switch to this plan whether you are being deployed or are currently deployed. After 39 months, the phone number will be deactivated and recycled.
If you’re in the military and need expedited unlocking before deployment, please call Customer Support at 1-800-CRICKET (1-800-274-2538) or dial 611 from your Cricket phone.
If you can’t meet the 6-month service requirement because of active deployment in the military, Cricket will unlock one phone for you. You must meet all the other requirements and provide documentation of your deployment status.
Please contact Cricket at [email protected].
Xfinity Mobile
Xfinity Mobile also allows armed forces members to suspend service for up to 39 months if deployed or transferred. You can keep your phone number and won’t be charged service fees during that time.
You must either have received orders to deploy outside the U.S. for more than 90 days or received a permanent change of duty station within the U.S. Also, you must have received the orders after signing up for the Xfinity Mobile service.
Bring your deployment paperwork into an Xfinity Retail Store or call 888-936-4968 to securely provide your deployment paperwork electronically.
Spectrum Mobile
Spectrum has no Veteran discounts, but the carrier will let you suspend your service if you get deployed. To suspend your account for up to 39 months, and learn more about your service options, or to suspend your account, call (833) 224-6603 and have your deployment papers available.
Tips When You’re Shopping for a Discount Plan
- Most wireless carriers provide a 15% discount to the primary phone number and varying discounts for each additional number.
- Proof of military service is required. Bring your military ID, veteran ID, or DD214 paperwork. See How to Get a Veterans ID or Military ID if you do not have one.
- Most wireless carriers will apply the discount to your account on a go-forward basis if you currently have a cellular service plan without the discount.
- Providers typically require establishing a two-year service agreement, or an existing service agreement must be renewed for an additional two years to qualify for the discount.
- If you don’t see your desired wireless carrier on this list, call the carrier and ask if they offer a military or veteran discount.
- Compare carriers. The best discount may not mean it’s the best-priced plan for your needs or a suitable carrier in your area. If you visit a store in person, ask for a manager if a customer service representative is unaware of any discount.
- Many popular cell phone providers offer discounts on unlocked cell phones to military members. Check out a phone manufacturer’s website to see if they offer military or employee phone discounts, and purchase the unlocked device from them directly.
Several device manufacturers also offer discounts on phones and accessories.
For example, the Apple Veterans and Military Store is available to current Military personnel and U.S. Military Veterans, National Guard, and Reserve, as well as to their immediate family members who live in the same household. Veterans and Military personnel receive a 10% discount on Apple products and accessories as a thank you for your service.
Motorola offers a 10% discount to veteran, active, retired, and reservist personnel eligible to take 10% off Motorola products.
Samsung offers a variety of discounts on electronic products upon verification with your .mil email address. Use the link to sign up for this discount.
This is just a small sampling of potential device discounts you can access. As you’re shopping, be sure to ask carriers about device discounts as well.
