Redstone Arsenal

Redstone Arsenal (RSA) is a U.S. Army base near Huntsville, Alabama. Founded during World War II as a chemical facility, RSA has since transformed into a hub for the Army’s missile program. The base hosts many operations, including the Tactical UAV Project Office, Redstone Test Center, Missile Defense Agency, and the Missile and Space Intelligence Center. Additionally, RSA is home to NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center.

In the 2020s, Redstone Arsenal became one of the key locations behind the development of the Directed Energy Maneuver-Short Range Air Defense, or DE M-SHORAD, which aims to use lasers to disable or destroy missiles and drones.

What kind of base is Redstone Arsenal?

Redstone is more than just an Army base. It supports various departments, including Defense, Justice, and NASA. Currently, it houses the U.S. Army Materiel Command, U.S. Army Aviation, and Missile Life Cycle Management Command, among others. It’s also the top choice for the U.S. Space Command headquarters.

Redstone Arsenal Housing

The military base at Redstone Arsenal offers a variety of housing options for both on-base and off-base residents. On-base housing is managed by a private partnership with IHG Candlewood Suites, providing temporary lodging and billeting services. The surrounding areas of Huntsville and Madison County, Alabama, offer a wide range of housing options for the over 50,000 civilian and contract employees and 700 active-duty soldiers residing in the area or off-base housing. The management of these housing options is handled by the Redstone Arsenal Army Community Service, ensuring a comfortable and secure living environment for all residents.

How to Apply For Housing

Redstone Arsenal offers privatized government housing with 362 units, comprising ten for general officers and 352 for officers and enlisted personnel. These one- and two-story buildings vary from single to multiplexed units.

All military personnel assigned to RAS with their families have housing eligibility. However, those with orders to RSA receive housing priority. Retirees, Department of Defense civilians, contractors, and other military families may access housing if available.

Note: Fox doesn’t offer emergency services. For emergencies, there are two major hospitals in Huntsville.

Childcare

There are three Child Development Centers on-post. They offer services for infants, toddler and preschool aged children to school year care for students.

Schooling
