Red River Army Depot (RRAD) is a critical military installation 18 miles west of Texarkana, Texas, in Bowie County. Covering 15,375 acres, RRAD handles ground combat and tactical systems maintenance. Services range from timber production to remanufacturing the Mine Resistant Ambush Protected Vehicle. Besides the US Army, RRAD aids the Marine Corps, Air Force, and Navy’s repair programs.

What Kind of Base is Red River Army Depot?
RRAD specializes in ammunition, general supply storage, and tank repair. With over 1,400 buildings and 8 million square feet of space, RRAD rebuilds various vehicle systems for the US Army. The depot has facilitated over 5,000 civilian deployments to Kuwait, Afghanistan, and Iraq. Employing over 3,500 diverse professionals, RRAD is the Army’s Center of Industrial and Technical Excellence for Tactical Wheeled Vehicles.
Red River Army Depot History
Founded in 1941, RRAD was initially an ammunition storage facility. World War II expanded its role to encompass general supplies and tank repair. Though considered for closure in 1995 and 2005, RRAD continues to offer vital Army maintenance support.
Red River Army Depot Housing

Red River Army Depot Surrounding Area
Located 18 miles west of Texarkana, RRAD sits in the scenic Four States Area known for its fields, woods, and water bodies. Texarkana is the closest major city at a 25-30 minute drive. RRAD is a two-and-a-half hour drive away from Dallas and Little Rock.
Red River Army Depot Inprocessing and Check-in
Upon reaching RRAD:
- Military personnel PCSing must check in through the Military Personnel in Fort Sill, Oklahoma.
- All visitors should go to Building 455A, the Visitor Control Center, to get a visitor’s badge.
- CAC holders must register at the Visitor Control Center.
- Vehicle registration necessitates a valid driver’s license, insurance proof, and registration documents.
- Operating hours: Monday to Thursday, 6:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (Closed from Friday to Sunday).
Vehicle Registration
For vehicle registration, head to Building 455A, the Visitor Control Center, from Monday to Thursday between 6:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. You’ll need a valid driver’s license, insurance, and registration documents. Those PCSing must report via Military Personnel in Fort Sill, Oklahoma.
Healthcare
Red River Army Depot Health Clinic offers medical services from Monday to Thursday, 7:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., and Friday from 7:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. It caters to active-duty military and civilians injured at work. For military family care, options exist at Barksdale Air Force Base and Little Rock Air Force Base.

Schooling
Red River Army Depot doesn’t have DoD Schools. Texarkana hosts four school districts: Texarkana TX, Texarkana AR, Liberty-Eylau, and Pleasant Grove. Additionally, within 1-5 miles of RRAD, independent school systems operate in New Boston TX, Hooks TX, and Leary TX.
