    Located eight miles northeast of downtown Las Vegas, Nellis Air Force Base is a significant U.S. Air Force installation renowned for advanced combat aviation training. The base proudly carries the title “Home of the Fighter Pilot” and specializes in advanced air combat exercises like Red Flag and Green Flag-West. The Combined Air and Space Operations Center-Nellis, USAF Warfare Center, and the Thunderbirds aerial demonstration team also call this base home.

    Nellis Air Force Base History

    Established in the Tonopah area of southern Nevada, Nellis AFB’s roots date back to 1940 when the location was identified as a potential military range. By 1941, the Las Vegas Army Airfield was activated, later evolving with significant units and training initiatives. In 1950, the base adopted its current name in honor of WWII P-47 Thunderbolt pilot Lieutenant William Harrell Nellis.

    Offering both on-base and off-base accommodations, Nellis AFB ensures quality living for its roughly 11,628 military personnel and over 22,728 family members. On-base housing comes with no security deposit and includes essential utilities. Residents receive an allowance for Electric/Gas, with overages billed separately.
