Nellis Air Force Base History
Established in the Tonopah area of southern Nevada, Nellis AFB’s roots date back to 1940 when the location was identified as a potential military range. By 1941, the Las Vegas Army Airfield was activated, later evolving with significant units and training initiatives. In 1950, the base adopted its current name in honor of WWII P-47 Thunderbolt pilot Lieutenant William Harrell Nellis.

Offering both on-base and off-base accommodations, Nellis AFB ensures quality living for its roughly 11,628 military personnel and over 22,728 family members.
