Naval Support Activity Crane History
Founded in 1941 as the Naval Ammunition Depot, NSA Crane expanded its horizons during the 1960s to include logistics, repair, design, and more. Key milestones include:
- 1974: Integration into the Naval Sea Systems Command.
- 1977: Introduction of the Crane Army Ammunition Activity (CAAA) command.
- 1992: Renaming to Crane Division, Naval Surface Warfare Center.
- 2005: Retention of most operations, with some moved to China Lake.

Naval Support Activity Crane Surrounding Area
The Naval Support Activity (NSA) Crane military base is located in Crane, Indiana, about a 30 minute drive southwest of Bloomington and an hour and a half drive south of Indianapolis. The base is also within driving distance of several outdoor recreational attractions, including the Hoosier National Forest and Monroe Lake, offering opportunities for hiking, camping, and water sports. The region is rich in history, with several historical sites and cultural attractions nearby, such as the Indiana Railway Museum and the French Lick Resort.
