Naval Air Station (NAS) Oceana is located in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Recognized as one of the world’s foremost air stations, NAS Oceana primarily trains and deploys the Navy’s Atlantic Fleet strike fighter squadrons of F/A-18 Hornets and Super Hornets. It hosts 14 deployable Strike Fighter squadrons and is famous for its annual public air show, demonstrating the Navy’s operational prowess.

Naval Air Station Oceana History
Founded in 1941 and commissioned in 1943, NAS Oceana initially acted as an outlying field for NAS Norfolk. The base saw expansion in 1943 and a significant shift in the 1950s when it was designated as a Master Jet Base. Today, it houses all East Coast strike fighter jet squadrons, manages Dam Neck Annex, and oversees Naval Auxiliary Landing Field Fentress.

On base housing is available at NAS Oceana. The management of those units involves the military and a private company. There are roughly 4,000 units in the Hampton Roads area.

Trees, swamps and farmland surround the Naval Air Station Oceana. The nearby area of Virginia Beach offers a variety of attractions such as the Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Center, a world-class amphitheater, and a multipurpose Sportsplex, along with 38 miles of shoreline and 28 miles of city beaches. It’s also a three-and-a-half hour drive from Washington, D.C

Active duty Navy and Marine Corps personnel, their families, and retired military members in the Hampton Roads area turn to the Charette Health Center in Portsmouth. This center is informally known as the Portsmouth Naval Medical Center (NMCP).
The Naval Air Station Oceana offers three Child Development Centers (CDCs) on base. Services include full day care and school year care for children as young as infants, to others still in school.
