What Kind of Base is Maxwell AFB and Gunter Annex?
The 42d Air Base Wing and the Air Force Reserve Command’s 908th Airlift Wing operate from here, using eight C-130H Hercules aircraft for global theater airlift.
Also part of Maxwell-Gunter AFB is the Gunter Annex, under the 42 ABW. Originally Gunter Field, it merged with Maxwell AFB in 1992. The base also hosts the Federal Prison Camp, Montgomery, for minimum-security male inmates. Over the years, Maxwell AFB has solidified its role as a paramount military education hub, even serving as the USAF’s postgraduate academic center.

Maxwell Gunter Air Force Base Surrounding Area
The surrounding area outside the Maxwell AFB is known as Alabama’s historic River Region. It offers a blend of small-town charm and big-city amenities. Montgomery, the state capital, about an hour-and-fifteen minute drive from Birmingham. It’s about a three-hour drive to Atlanta, Georiga.
Healthcare
On-post medical services are available at the Maxwell AFB and Gunter Annex Medical Clinic. It offers a number of services including family practice, pediatrics, and dentistry. Dental services are only for active duty members.
Note: There are no emergency services on-base, so emergency care is required off-base at one of the four local hospitals in Montgomery.
Childcare
The Maxwell Air Force Base and Gunter Annex offers a variety of childcare options through its three Child Development Centers. These centers provide full-day care for infants, toddlers and preschool aged children, and one school year center offers care for students.
Schooling
Maxwell AFB houses a DDESS Elementary School for students in preschool (4-year-olds) through 8th grade residing in permanent housing on Maxwell AFB and Gunter Annex. Reach out to the School Liaison Office at 334-953-6430 for more information.
Within 25 miles of Montgomery, 84 public schools cover K-12 education across four county systems: Montgomery, Autauga, Pike Road, and Elmore. These schools offer standard to advanced curriculums, vocational training, and services for students with special needs, including speech therapy.
High school students on base attend Carver Senior (Maxwell) or Lee High School (Gunter) in the Montgomery County System, with bus service available.
