    MCAS Miramar History

    Historically rooted in the Kumeyaay Native Americans, the base evolved as a training ground through both World Wars, the Vietnam War, and more. Originally known as Naval Auxiliary Air Station (NAAS) Miramar, it became the Naval Air Station (NAS) Miramar. The base gained fame for housing the TOPGUN training program and inspiring the related film.

    PCS and TDY Lodging

    MCAS Miramar provides lodging for those on Temporary Duty (TDY) or Permanent Change of Station (PCS) at the Inns of the Corps – Miramar on Bauer Road, Building 2515. Make reservations 24/7 at 858-271-7111. The Marine Lodge – Miramar at 19920 Schlit Ave also offers lodging.

    Situated in Miramar, San Diego, the base neighbors Mira Mesa, Scripps Ranch, University City, Clairemont, and Tierrasanta. “East Miramar,” east of Kearny Villa Road, remains a military training site. MCAS Miramar lies close to attractions in San Diego, Naval Air Station North Island, and Camp Pendleton.


    MCAS Miramar Branch Health Clinic on Bauer Road, Building 2496, offers diverse medical services from Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Note: there’s no on-base Emergency Room; emergencies should head to the Naval Medical Center San Diego.


    MCAS Miramar hosts the Youth and Teen Center, providing comprehensive care for children, from pre-toddler to school-aged, throughout the year.


    San Diego Unified and Poway Unified School Districts are nearby. Transport varies by district, and understanding these options before settling is crucial. There are no Department of Defense schools at MCAS Miramar. San Diego Unified School District serves a diverse student body across various schools, while the Poway Unified School District spans a vast area catering to urban and rural students.
