    The Los Angeles Air Force Base (LAAFB) in El Segundo is the sole active-duty military installation in the Los Angeles metropolitan area.     Los Angeles Air Force Base History?

    LAAFB traces its origins to July 1, 1954, as the Air Research and Development Command’s Western Development Division. By 1964, it became the Los Angeles Air Force Station and earned its current designation in 1987. In August 2021, it emerged as the SSC’s headquarters. Prominent units at LAAFB are the 61st Air Base Group and the Space and Missile Systems Center (SMC), which are essential for advancing military space systems.

    Tierra Vista Community manages housing at LAAFB, with offerings at Fort MacArthur. For assistance, reach the Housing Management Office or the Housing Referral Office at 310-653-8460. Single first-term airmen should connect with their First Sergeant. Before out-processing, ensure you have the necessary passports or visas.

    The Housing Management Office assists with off-base referrals too.

    PCS and TDY Lodging

    Fort MacArthur Inn, located at 2400 S. Pacific Ave Bldg. 37, San Pedro, provides temporary lodging. Reserve by calling 310-653-8296 or 888-235-6343. Operating hours currently are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Pet owners should inquire about available pet-friendly rooms.

    Los Angeles Air Force Base Surrounding Area

    LAAFB, near Los Angeles International Airport and the San Diego Freeway (I-405), is close to beaches, mountains, theme parks, and Hollywood’s sparkle. Fort MacArthur, a housing and administrative annex, lies around twenty miles southeast.

    Healthcare

    The Clinic, 61 MDS at 483 N. Aviation Boulevard, offers on-post medical services from Monday to Friday, with specific hours on the first Thursday of each month. Note: Neither the primary clinic nor the Fort MacArthur satellite clinic has emergency services.

    Childcare

    The Child Development Center at 483 N. Aviation Blvd provides diverse care programs from Monday to Friday, 6:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

    • Los Angeles Air Force Base Family Child Care Program: Full-day care for infants, pre-toddler, preschool, or toddler.
    • Los Angeles Air Force Base School Age Care: School Year Care, Summer Camp offered for School-aged children.

    Schooling

    There are no schools on-base. Base residents attend schools in the Los Angeles Unified School District. Some families can request transfers to preferred schools. For guidance, contact the School Liaison at 310-653-8631. Ensure you have all necessary registration documents.
