Laughlin Air Force Base History

Established in 1943 and named after WWII casualty Jack T. Laughlin, the base has evolved from training B-26 Marauder crews during WWII to playing a critical role in the Cuban Missile Crisis, and now specializes in comprehensive pilot training programs, marking its significance in military history and modern defense operations.

Laughlin AFB offers on-base housing options. Hunt Companies manages and operates the housing options on the base. There are also dorms or barracks for unaccompanied service members.

Off-base housing is also available in the surrounding areas of Val Verde Park and Del Rio.

How to Apply For Housing

To apply for housing at the military base, the first step is to contact the Military Housing Office (MHO) at 830-298-5732. The office is closed on weekends and holidays.

PCS and TDY Lodging

At the military base, temporary lodging options are available for both Temporary Duty (TDY) and Permanent Change of Station (PCS) personnel. On Laughlin AFB, lodging is at Laughlin Manor. To make reservations, call 830-298-5731.

The 47th Medical Group operates a clinic on the Laughlin AFB. It offers outpatient primary and specialty care to TRICARE beneficiaries. 

Note: Emergency services are unavailable at this clinic, but Val Verde Regional Medical Center in Del Rio provides emergency care.

Childcare

Laughlin AFB offers childcare options are provided through its two Child Development Centers (CDCs). The facilities offer full-day, part-day and hourly care. These programs are designed to accommodate children of various age ranges, ensuring that each child receives age-appropriate care and education.

Schooling

For families living on Laughlin AFB are in the San Felipe Del Rio Consolidated Independent School District. If you live off-base, other school districts in the area include Comstock Independent School District and Brackett Independent School District.
