Holloman Air Force Base History
Holloman Air Force Base was established in 1942 and named in honor of Col. George V. Holloman, a pioneer in guided missile research. The base covers an area of 59,639 acres.
In the 1960s, the base became a Tactical Fighter Wing and played a role in the Vietnam War. It later transitioned to the F-15 Eagle era and then to the F-117 Nighthawk era. Currently, the base is focused on training F-16 Fighting Falcon and MQ-9 Reaper pilots, as well as providing support to other mission partners.
Holloman Air Force Base Housing
On-base housing options are available at Holloman Air Force Base. Soaring Heights Communities manages and operates housing at the base through a public-private partnership. There are also barracks for certain airmen.
Off-base housing is available in the surrounding areas, such as Alamogordo, New Mexico, which is located just six miles east of the base.

Holloman Air Force Base Surrounding Area
Holloman Air Force Base is located in the Tularosa Basin of New Mexico, about 10 miles west of Alamogordo. The base is situated between the Sacramento and San Andres mountain ranges, offering a picturesque backdrop. Nearby towns include Alamogordo, El Paso, and Las Cruces. Outdoor and recreational attractions in the area include White Sands National Park, which features stunning white sand dunes, and the Lincoln National Forest, which offers hiking, camping, and wildlife viewing opportunities. The unique regional feature of the area is the White Sands, a vast expanse of gypsum sand dunes that create a surreal and otherworldly landscape.
Healthcare
Medical services at Holloman AFB are provided by the 49th Medical Group at a on-base clinic. It offers preventative-focused ambulatory care clinic.
Note: There are no emergency services offered at the on-base clinic. The nearest emergency services are available at Gerald Champion Regional Medical Center in Alamogordo.
Childcare
Holloman AFB offers childcare at two Child Development Centers (CDCs). They offer full-day, part-day, and hourly care services. Children as young as 6 months to as old as 5 years can qualify for childcare services. There are also school year care programs for students living on the base.
Schooling
Holloman AFB offers education options for those living on-base. The Alamogordo Public School District is the main district servicing families on-and-off base.
There are two schools on-base are Holloman Elementary School and Holloman Middle School. Besides those schools, APS also has eight other elementary schools, two middle schools and a traditional high school.
