F.E. Warren Air Force Base History
F.E. Warren AFB was established in 1867 as Fort David Allen Russell by the United States Army. In 1947, it came under the control of the United States Army Air Forces and then the United States Air Force.
It is the oldest continuously active military installation within the Air Force. The base has undergone various transformations and changes in function over the years, and it is currently operated by the Air Force Global Strike Command.

F.E. Warren AFB offers on-base housing options for families. Balfour Beatty Communities manages housing on the base. Housing options are available to active duty Air Force, Naval Reserve, Army Guard, Air National Guard, their families, civilian personnel working on the installation, and retirees.
Off-base housing is also an option in nearby Cheyenne and the surrounding area.
How to Apply For Housing
To apply for housing at a military base, the first step is to contact the Force Support Squadron at F.E. Warren AFB at 307-773-2115. It’s important to note, availability may be limited, especially during the last two weeks of July due to the annual Cheyenne Frontier Days rodeo celebration.
PCS and TDY Lodging
Temporary lodging at the military base is available for both Temporary Duty (TDY) and Permanent Change of Station (PCS) personnel at the Crow Creek Inn. Contact the Lodging Office at 307-773-1844 to make reservations.

Francis E. Warren Air Force Base is surrounded by a variety of outdoor and recreational attractions, including Vedauwoo Recreation Area, Curt Gowdy State Park, and Medicine Bow National Forest. Nearby towns include Cheyenne, which has a population of over 60,000 residents, and Fort Collins, Colorado, which is about an hour’s drive away. The area is known for its high altitude, lack of humidity, and warm days with cool nights.
On-base medical services are available at the F. E. Warren AFB Medical Clinic. The 90th Medical Group medical and dental care options.
Note: inpatient care, 24-hour care and emergency care are not provided at the on-base clinic. For those services, you’ll need to find a hospital in the nearby community of Cheyenne, Wyoming.
F.E. Warren AFB offers childcare services at its on-base Child Development Center (CDC). It offers full-day, part-day, and hourly care services for children 6 months old to 5 years old. There are also school year care options for students who live on-base.
