    Fort Hamilton History

    Fort Hamilton, was established in 1831. It was initially designed as a landward defense for Fort Lafayette and has undergone significant transformations over the years. The fort played a crucial role during the American Revolution and the Civil War, serving as a garrison and a prisoner-of-war camp. It also served as the nation’s first National Guard training camp in 1839.

    On-post housing options are available at Fort Hamilton. Balfour Beatty Communities manages the housing options on-post. Most housing options contain townhome-like units.

    Off-post housing is also an option, however, the cost-of-living in the surrounding area may drive up housing costs.

    The base is home to a combined community of active duty Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, National Guard, Reserve Components, retired military, DoD appropriated and Non-appropriated fund employees, contractors, and family members.

Once you’ve contacted the housing management office, they will guide you through the specific procedures for application.

    PCS and TDY Lodging

    For temporary lodging at the military base, options include facilities like the Holiday Inn Express at Fort Hamilton. It’s an ideal choice for both Temporary Duty (TDY) and Permanent Change of Station (PCS) personnel due to its convenient location and round-the-clock service.

    Fort Hamilton Surrounding Area

    Fort Hamilton is a U.S. Army installation located in the southwestern corner of the New York City borough of Brooklyn. It is surrounded by the communities of Bay Ridge, Dyker Heights, and Bensonhurst. The surrounding area is rich in history and culture, with several historical sites such as the Harbor Defense Museum located within the base itself. The base is also in close proximity to outdoor recreational attractions like the John Paul Jones Park. The region is characterized by its unique blend of urban living and military tradition.


    On-post medical services are available at the Ainsworth Army Health Clinic. The nearest U.S. Army medical treatment facility is Keller Army Hospital, about an hour-and-a-half away on West Point.

    Note: There are no emergency services available at Fort Hamilton.


    Fort Hamilton offers a variety of childcare options at its Child Development Center (CDC) located on-post. It provides full-day, part-day, and hourly care services, catering to different age ranges. There are also school year care options for students.


    There are no schools on-post at Fort Hamilton. Several school districts and schooling options are available in the surrounding areas.
