    Fort Greely is in southern Alaska. It’s also known as U.S. Army Garrison USAG Alaska, Greely. The fort is a key part of the United States Army’s defense capabilities. It houses the Ground-based Midcourse Defense (GMD) missile defense system. The base is also a pivotal testing location for U.S. military testing, as it houses the Cold Regions Test Center (CRTC), where equipment is tested and affirmed against the formidable Alaskan cold.

    Fort Greely History

    Fort Greely, a United States Army launch site for anti-ballistic missiles, was established in 1942 as Big Delta Army Air Field. It played a crucial role during World War II, aiding the Soviet Union in their fight against Germany and Japan by sending airplanes and supplies through Alaska and into the Soviet Far East.

    Fort Greely Housing

    There is minimal on-post housing options outside of barracks and some rental options at Fort Greely, Alaska. Most of the territory Fort Greely encompasses serves as testing ground for equipment.

    However, off-post housing is also an option, with the nearby town of Delta Junction offering additional residential possibilities.

    How to Apply For Housing

    To apply for housing at the military base, you’ll first need to contact the Fort Greely Lodging Office at 907-873-4795.

    As Fort Greely is a Missile Defense site with high security, you may need a sponsor or the correct ID to access the base. For information on accessing the post, call the Visitors Center at 907-873-3663.

    PCS and TDY Lodging

    Temporary lodging at the military base offers a variety of options for both Temporary Duty (TDY) and Permanent Change of Station (PCS) personnel. Reservations can be made by contacting the Lodging Office at 907-873-0016.

    Fort Greely Surrounding Area

    Fort Greely is between two stunning mountain ranges, offering breathtaking scenery and unique regional features. The nearest town, Delta Junction, is about 5 miles north of Fort Greely and is known as the end of the Alaska Highway. Outdoor and recreational attractions include the Cold Regions Test Center, which takes advantage of the area’s extreme cold for equipment testing, and the nearby Richardson Highway, which offers opportunities for exploration and adventure.

    Healthcare

    On-post medical services are available at Fort Greely. Fort Greely Medical Clinic facilities offer care for soldiers and their families.

    Childcare

    Fort Greely offers on-post childcare options. Its Child Development Center (CDC) offers full-day, part-day, and hourly care services. The care is for infants, toddlers and preschoolers. However, there are programs focused toward school year care for students.

    Schooling

    On-post education options are available for families living at Fort Greely. The Delta/Greely School District serves the families stationed at Fort Greely.
