What Kind of Base is Vance Air Force Base?
Housing the 71st Flying Training Wing from the Air Education and Training Command, Vance AFB specializes in molding aviation cadets into pilots and officers. The base has evolved over the years, adapting its training aircraft and systems to meet the Air Force’s changing needs.
Vance Air Force Base History
Established on November 21, 1941, the base started as the Air Corps Basic Flying School, focusing on pilot and officer training. Renamed Vance Air Force Base in 1949, it honors Lieutenant Colonel Leon Robert Vance Jr., a World War II Medal of Honor awardee. After deactivating in 1947, the base reopened in 1948 and has been a pivotal training ground, including joint training with the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps since 1996.

Vance AFB accommodates around 1,200 military personnel and over 1,100 family members. Hunt Military Housing manages housing on base. For housing inquiries, contact the Family Housing Office.

Note: Military members married to another military member in grades E1 through E3, and E4 with less than 3 years of service when geographically separated and not accompanied by family members, must reside in the dorms.

Vance Air Force Base Surrounding Area
Vance Air Force Base is on the southern area of Enid, Oklahoma. It’s about an hour-and-a-half drive to Oklahoma City to the south. To the east, Tulsa is about a two-hour drive, and Wichita, KS is about 2 hours north of the base.
The 71st Medical Group Clinic serves active-duty members and their families. Dental services are limited to active duty. For emergencies, two in-network civilian hospitals are available downtown.
Vance AFB offers comprehensive childcare solutions, from full-day to hourly care. Special programs include developmental guidance and parent education. The Child Development Center at 334 Phillips St, Building 336, ensures a nurturing environment for children. Services include a School Year care program for students, as well as a childcare program offer full day care for infants, toddlers and preschool aged children.
No DoDDS schools are on the base. However, many options, such as Eisenhower Elementary, are available within Enid Public Schools. The district comprises 11 elementary, three middle, and two high schools. Chisholm School District in North Enid offers a consolidated educational experience. Other options include private schools and rural districts. The School Liaison Program assists with registration and school-related matters.
