    What Kind of Base is Offutt Air Force Base?

    Offutt Air Force Base is home to the U.S. Strategic Command (USSTRATCOM), the 557th Weather Wing, and the 55th Wing of the Air Combat Command. Established as Fort Crook in 1890, it played a pivotal role during World War II, producing key B-29 Superfortresses. Now, it hosts various units and commands vital to national defense.

    Offutt Air Force Base History

    Established in 1890 as Fort Crook, Offutt started its aviation journey in 1918 with the 61st Balloon Company. Renamed Offutt Field after World War I in honor of 1st Lt. Jarvis Offutt, the base expanded its role in WWII by producing B-29 Superfortresses. By 1948, it hosted the Strategic Air Command’s headquarters. In 1992, it became the USSTRATCOM headquarters.

    Offutt Air Force Base Housing

    There is on-base housing at Offutt Air Force Base. The two areas on base are Coffman Heights and Fort Crook Historic Housing. Off-base housing is at Capehart Housing. Rising View manages privately owned family housing in-and-around the base.

    Coffman Heights offers housing for junior to senior NCOs and senior officers. Fort Crook Historic Housing is at the central portion of the base, and is divided into Chief’s Row and General’s Row.

    PCS and TDY Lodging

    There is temporary lodging at Offutt AFB. It is at the Lodging Office at the Malmstrom Inn. Any inbound personnel will be allowed to stay up to 30 days once arriving. Call 402-294-3671 to get a reservation.

    Offutt Air Force Base Surrounding Area

    Offutt Air Force Base lies near Bellevue and about a 15 minute drive from downtown Omaha. The surrounding area offers recreational attractions like parks and golf courses. Bellevue, Papillion, and Omaha provide shopping, dining, and entertainment. Visit the Strategic Air Command & Aerospace Museum or the Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium to experience local history and culture.

    Healthcare

    Ehrling Bergquist Clinic offers on-base medical services. The first priority of care is to active-duty military. The second priority is to family members of active-duty members, with retired military and their family members enrolled in TRICARE Prime next.

    Dental care services are available to active-duty military only.

    Note: There is no emergency room at the clinic. For acute care, you must go to the nearest Urgent Care Clinic located off base.

    Childcare

    At the base, Offutt AFB offers two main Child Development Centers (CDCs) for families. They both offer full day care for infants, toddler and preschool aged children. There is also a school year care for students.
