    In 1868, Connecticut granted the Navy 112 acres along the Thames River in Groton, leading to the establishment of the Navy Yard, which became the Navy’s first submarine base in 1912. During World War II, the base saw substantial expansion to serve the growing combat fleet. Despite a recommended closure in 2005, the base continues operations today as a fundamental East Coast submarine base.

    Naval Submarine Base New London is located in Groton, Connecticut, across the Thames River from New London. The base is surrounded by picturesque historic villages and bustling urban centers. Nearby attractions include scenic coastlines, vintage cider mills and the largest nightclubs between New York and Boston. The base is also within a short drive of many beaches, shopping malls, state parks and popular casinos like Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods.

    The base is accessible from I-95 and is within an hour’s drive from major airports such as Bradley International Airport in Hartford, CT, and T.F. Green Airport in Providence, RI.
