During the Civil War, Newport temporarily hosted the US Naval Academy, training Union midshipmen. The 1970s saw the Cruiser Destroyer Force Atlantic move to Naval Station Norfolk, yet Newport, hosting the Naval War College and Naval Justice School, remained pivotal. Following 2005’s Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC), it added the Officer Candidate School and Naval Supply Corps School.
