Established in 1827, Fort Leavenworth in Leavenworth County is the oldest active U.S. Army post west of the Mississippi. Known as the “Intellectual Center of the Army,” it houses the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC) and the U.S. Army Combined Arms Center (CAC). The CAC leads in leader development, collective training, and Army doctrine. Additionally, the base hosts the Military Corrections Complex, the Department of Defense’s only maximum security prison.

Fort Leavenworth History
Fort Leavenworth was originally a forward base during the U.S. westward expansion and attracted soldiers, settlers, and American Indians alike. It was home to the U.S. 10th Cavalry Regiment, the “Buffalo Soldiers.” Now, it spans 5,600 acres with over 1,000 buildings.
Fort Leavenworth Housing
On-post housing, managed by Frontier Heritage Communities, is optional unless designated by the Installation Commander. Military personnel with dependents can apply for housing. Reach out to the Housing Service Office (HSO) at 600 Thomas Avenue for off-post housing assistance. Note: Accepting on-post housing is not justification to break a lease or rental agreement.
How to Apply For Housing
Visit the HSO on the 3rd floor of 600 Thomas Avenue upon arrival. The application process requires proof of military service and possibly other documents. Housing varies based on rank and family size.PCS and TDY Lodging

Fort Leavenworth Surrounding Area
Nestled in Leavenworth City, the base is a historical treasure. Explore the Frontier Military Scenic Byway, the city’s recreational spots, or the nearby rivers. Fort Leavenworth is a 30-minute drive to the Kansas City International Airport. Outdoor enthusiasts will appreciate the green spaces and campus setting of the base, as well as the nearby Missouri and Platte rivers.
Fort Leavenworth Inprocessing and Check-in
On arrival, have your documents ready. Update your military pay account at the G1 office in Building 119. Medical staff should head to the Medical Company orderly room on the 2nd floor of Munson Army Health Center. U.S. Disciplinary Barracks personnel must check in at Building 429.
Vehicle Registration
Register vehicles at 210 Grant Ave, open 24/7. Required documents: ownership proof, insurance, and a valid license. Remember to register promptly to avoid penalties.
Healthcare
Munson Army Health Center at 550 Pope Ave offers general to specialty care. Priorities are active-duty military, then family and retirees. Some cases may be referred off-base.
Childcare
The three main Child Development Centers (CDCs) operate on base:
- Main CDC: Comprehensive childcare (120 Dickman Ave, Building 62)
- Osage Center: Childcare and school-age programs (130 Dickman Ave, Building 1098)
- Santa Fe CDC: Child development and activities (190 Hancock Ave, Building 2400)
These centers offer a range of care from hourly care, part-day, to full-day programs.
Schooling
Residents attend Fort Leavenworth USD 207 up to 9th grade, accredited by the Kansas State Department of Education. Pre-K students must live on base all year. Kindergarten runs full-day at all elementary schools. High school students (grades 10-12) attend Leavenworth High School, with transportation provided.
For transportation queries, all students beyond walking distance from schools receive bus service. High school students also get bus services to and from Leavenworth High School.
