    Altus Air Force Base (Altus AFB) is in Altus, Oklahoma. The base is home to the 97th Air Mobility Wing which is assigned to the Nineteenth Air Force of the Air Education and Training Command. The base’s primary mission is to train flight crews and maintain aircraft, using models like the C-17 Globemaster III, KC-135 Stratotanker, and KC-46 Pegasus.

    Altus AFB History

    Founded as Altus Army Airfield in 1943, the base has shifted from WWII pilot training to managing bomber and tanker aircraft and missile sites. In 1992, the 97th Air Mobility Wing was activated, and in 2014, Altus AFB became the formal training unit for the KC-46A Pegasus. The base is pivotal in global operations, supporting missions like Desert Storm, Enduring Freedom, and Iraqi Freedom.

    Altus AFB Housing

    Housing on Altus Air Force Base is privatized. Balfour-Beatty Communities manages housing at Altus AFB Homes. They offer rental homes ranging from two to four-bedroom floor plans for married and accompanied military memebers. The community enjoys features like a pet-friendly community, playgrounds, a pool, a sand volleyball court, fitness rooms, and more.

    Single and unaccompanied service members between the ranks of E1 through E4 are eligible to be placed on a waiting list for on-base dorms. The waiting list is ordered based on rank and date of sign-up.

    How to Apply For Housing

    To apply for housing at Altus AFB Homes, you can call 580-379-4002, or fill out a leasing request using the online portal.

    PCS and TDY Lodging

    Those traveling on orders to Altus AFB are encouraged to make reservations for Temporary Lodging as early as possible, especially during PCS and TDY season. You can do so by calling 580-481-7356.

    You may be authorized up to ten days of reimbursement for TLE stays while traveling on orders, but be advised, the official site warns, “if you stay in quarters prior to your arrival here, this will count towards your ten days TLE reimbursement.” Limited pet-friendly accommodations may be available. It is best to call first as space is not always available for pets.

    Altus AFB Surrounding Area

    Altus Air Force Base (Altus AFB) is located approximately 4 miles east-northeast of Altus, Oklahoma. The base is surrounded by several outdoor and recreational attractions, including the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge and the Quartz Mountain Nature Park, both offering hiking, camping, and wildlife viewing opportunities.

    Healthcare

    On-base medical services and outpatient care are available at 97th Medical Group. It offers primarily out-patient services. There are some dental services offered, but only for active-duty members.

    Note: The clinic does not offer emergency services. Those in-need of emergency care should find the nearest hospital in the local community.

    Childcare

    On-base childcare options can be found at two Child Development Centers (CDCs). They offer full day care options for children as young as infants, all the way to preschool aged children. There is also a center that houses an after school program during the school year.

    Schooling

    There are no on-base schools. Schooling is provided by Altus Public Schools and Navajo Public Schools.
