Veteran Voices Giveaway Official Rules

Official Rules for our ongoing series Veteran Voices.

Veteran Voices Giveaway Official Rules

OFFICIAL RULES

The 2025 Veteran Voices Giveaway (the “Giveaway”)

NO PURCHASE OR PAYMENT OF ANY KIND IS NECESSARY TO ENTER OR WIN. A PURCHASE WILL NOT INCREASE YOUR CHANCE OF WINNING. All federal, state, and local laws and regulations apply to the Promotion. The Promotion is void in any state or local jurisdiction where it is prohibited or restricted by law or regulation.

  1. Sponsor

The Sponsor of this Promotion is Three Creeks Media, a media company not affiliated with the United States Department of Veterans Affairs or any government agency, and having a place of business at 503 E. Nifong, #121, Columbia, MO 65201 .

  1. Eligibility

Eligibility to win the “2025 Veteran Voices Giveaway” or any other name the Sponsor may deem appropriate for promotional purposes, is open to any Qualifying Veteran (as defined below) entrant and Spouse of Qualifying Veteran entrant, so long as the entrant is not an Ineligible Person (defined below), so long as the entrant is Domiciled in one of the fifty (50) States of the United States of America or the District of Columbia (D.C.) at the time of entering the Promotion, and so long as the entrant is at least the age of majority, be it 18 years of age or an older age, in the State (or D.C.) of their Domicile at the time of entering the Promotion (each, an “Eligible Person”).

For purposes of these Rules, the following terms have the following indicated meanings:

“Domicile”, means the place established as a person’s permanent, principal residence and to which, whenever the person is absent, the person intends to return, even though the person may actually temporarily reside elsewhere (often, the place where a person is entitled to vote). For example, a person who is stationed at a military installation in the State of Colorado but who is, or could lawfully be, registered to vote in the State of Missouri and who intends to return to the State of Missouri upon ceasing service in the United States military is probably Domiciled in Missouri even while temporarily located in Colorado.

A “Qualifying Veteran” means a person who, at the time of entry in the Sweepstakes, (i) is then currently serving as a Servicemember (defined below) or (ii) formerly served as a Servicemember and was discharged or separated with a character of service of “Honorable Discharge.” Persons who received any type of discharge, separation, or character of service other than “honorable,” such as a general discharge, a general discharge under honorable conditions, a bad conduct discharge or a dishonorable discharge, do not meet the definition of a “Qualifying Veteran” and are ineligible to win the Sweepstakes.

The term “Servicemember” means a person who is a member of the United States Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, Coast Guard, Space Force, Army National Guard, Air National Guard, Army Reserve, Navy Reserve, Marine Corps Reserve, Air Force Reserve, or Coast Guard Reserve.

“Ineligible Person(s)” means:

Employees, directors and officers of Sponsor or any of its respective affiliates, parent company, subsidiaries or divisions (“Sponsor Entities”) and their immediate family members and household members. As used in these Rules, “immediate family member(s)” refers to spouses, parents, step-parents, children, step-children, siblings, step-siblings, and the respective spouses of any such persons. As used in these Rules, “household member(s)” refers to persons living in the same residence as one or more of the above-mentioned employees, directors, officers or immediate family members.

As used in these Rules, the term “you,” “your” or the like, refers to any person who enters or seeks to enter or participate in the Promotion, but in no event shall any use of any such term (nor shall any provision making use of any such term) be construed as expanding or otherwise changing who may qualify as an Eligible Person, as set forth in these Rules.

Sponsor is free to determine eligibility, or ineligibility, using such rigor, method(s), review, verification, research, document requests and information requests as it chooses in its sole and absolute discretion. AN ENTRANT, HOWEVER, AS A CONDITION TO BEING NAMED THE WINNER OF THE PRIZE, MUST PROVIDE SUCH PROOF OF ELIGIBILITY AS SPONSOR REQUESTS, AND MUST DO SO WITHIN SUCH TIME FRAME AS SPONSOR REQUESTS; FAILURE TO PROVIDE PROOF TO SPONSOR’S SATISFACTION (WHICH SHALL BE IN SPONSOR’S SOLE AND ABSOLUTE DISCRETION) OR FAILURE TO DO SO WITHIN SUCH TIME FRAME AS SPONSOR REQUIRES (WHICH TIME ASPECT IS OF THE ESSENCE OF THESE RULES) WILL, IN SPONSOR’S SOLE AND ABSOLUTE DISCRETION AND WITH OR WITHOUT NOTICE, DISQUALIFY THE ENTRANT FROM BEING NAMED A WINNER AND FROM THE PROMOTION. YOU MAY NOT ENTER THIS PROMOTION IF YOU ARE NOT ELIGIBLE TO WIN. IF INELIGIBLE ENTRIES ARE SUBMITTED IN THIS PROMOTION, WHETHER OR NOT SELECTED IN A DRAWING (OR OTHERWISE SELECTED), THEY ARE INELIGIBLE FOR THE WINNING OF ANY PRIZE IN THE PROMOTION.

An entrant may be required to provide documents (originals or copies, as requested) deemed satisfactory to Sponsor, including, but not limited to, DD Form(s) 214, current statement(s) of service signed by the entrant’s unit commander, adjutant or other officer, NGB Form(s) 22, NGB Form(s) 23, VA Form(s) 26-1817, VA Form(s) 21-534, Uniformed Services I.D. Card, Certificate(s) of Eligibility (COE) relating to U.S. Veterans Administration loans, current military identification, current enlistment contract, recently certified marriage license (if relevant), recently certified death certificate (if relevant), and/or signed and notarized affidavit(s). These are just examples; some of these examples might not be relevant to you, and, regardless of such relevance, additional and/or other documentation may be required of you.

  1. Agreement to Official Rules

Participation in the Promotion constitutes entrants full and unconditional agreement to and acceptance of these Official Rules and the decisions of the Sponsor, which are final and binding. Winning a prize is contingent upon fulfilling all requirements set forth herein.

  1. Taxes and Costs

The winner is solely responsible for all costs associated with accepting the Prize, including all federal, state, and/or local taxes, fees or expenses associated with the prizes they receive, regardless of whether it, in whole or in part, is used. No Prize will be awarded to any person, whether eligible or not, in any jurisdiction where this Promotion is restricted or prohibited by law or regulation. Sponsor will not permit substitution, transfer or payment of a cash equivalent for any Prize except that the Sponsor, in its sole discretion, may substitute any Prize (or any portion thereof) with a Prize of equal or greater value, as a result of the unavailability of the Prize, or for any other reason.

  1. Notification of Winner

If necessary, potential Winner will be issued an IRS 1099-MISC form for the value of the Prize. Please allow 4-8 weeks for shipment of Prize after confirmation. If Sponsor does not receive a response with the Potential Winner’s mailing address within three (3) days of attempted notification, or if a Potential Winner is found not to be eligible or not in compliance with these Official Rules, or if the Prize is unclaimed, such individual will be disqualified and his/her Prize will be forfeited, all in Sponsor’s sole discretion. Prizes won by an eligible Entrant who is a minor in his/her state of residence will require parent or legal guardian to sign and return all required documents. Sponsor is not responsible for any change of email address, mailing address and/or telephone number of Entrants. Four Chaplains Day
Photo by Master Sgt. Chris Botzum

Military service often entails sacrifice. Service members must sacrifice time with loved ones in order to carry out orders. Families must sacrifice stability in residence in order for service members to be stationed where they are needed.

Troops must sacrifice creature comforts and familiar surroundings in order to forward deploy. And, at times, men and women of the military might have to make the ultimate sacrifice for their fellow soldiers, sailors, airmen, or Marines. However these sacrifices may be acknowledged, whether honored publicly or observed privately, they are a part of the reality that is serving in the military.

Four Chaplains Day is one such day of public observation. Each year on Feb. 3rd, this day of remembrance is celebrated across the country. It honors four military chaplains who sacrificed their own lives to save the lives of their fellow service members during WWII.

Four Chaplains Day will be observed on Saturday, Feb. 3rd, 2024.

Who Were the Four Chaplains?

The men who came to be known as the Four Chaplains were Methodist minister the Reverend George L. Fox, Reformed Church in America minister the Reverend Clark V. Poling, Reform Rabbi Alexander D. Goode (PhD), and Roman Catholic priest Father John P. Washington. The four men had met while attending Chaplains School at Harvard in preparation for each of their appointments as chaplains.

George Lansing Fox was born March 15, 1900, in Lewistown, Pennsylvania. He left school at 17 and lied about his age in order to serve as an Army medical corp assistant in WWI. During his tour of duty, Fox was awarded the Purple Heart, the Silver Star, and the French Croix de Guerre for his bravery. Then, during WWII, Fox accepted an appointment as an Army chaplain on July 24, 1942 and began active duty on Aug. 8, 1942. After he completed Army Chaplains school at Harvard, Fox reported to the 411th Coast Artillery Battalion at Camp Davis in North Carolina.

Clark Vandersall Poling was born Aug. 7, 1910, in Columbus, Ohio. He studied at Yale University’s Divinity School in New Haven, Connecticut. Polling graduated with his B.D. degree in 1936, and was ordained in the Reformed Church in America. During WWII, he applied to serve as an Army chaplain, and accepted his appointment on June 10, 1942. On June 25, he reported to the 131st Quartermaster Truck Regiment at Camp Shelby, Hattiesburg, Mississippi.

Reform Rabbi Alexander D. Goode (PhD) was born in Brooklyn, New York on May 10, 1911. He studied  for the rabbinate at Hebrew Union College. He graduated with a B.H. degree in 1937, and then received his PhD from Johns Hopkins University in 1940. Goode had originally applied to become a Navy chaplain in 1941, but was not accepted. However, after the attack on Pearl Harbor, he applied to become an Army chaplain. Goode received his appointment on July 21, 1942 and went on active duty on Aug. 9, 1942. After Chaplains School at Harvard, he was then assigned to the 333rd Airbase Squadron in Goldsboro, North Carolina.

John Patrick Washington was born in Newark, New Jersey on July 18, 1908. To prepare for entrance into the priesthood, he completed high school and college courses at Seton Hall, in South Orange, New Jersey. Washington graduated in 1931 with an A.B. Degree, then entered Immaculate Conception Seminary in Darlington, New Jersey, where he was ordained a priest on June 15, 1935. Shortly after Pearl Harbor, Washington received his appointment as an Army chaplain. He reported for active duty on May 9, 1942, and was assigned to the 76th Infantry Division in Ft. George Meade, Maryland in June.

Sinking of the SS Dorchester

After the four new chaplains had completed Chaplain School at Harvard, they all boarded the USAT Dorchester to travel to Europe and report to their new assignments. The Dorchester left New York on Jan. 23, 1943, with a convoy of ships headed for the Army Command Base at Narsarsuaq in southern Greenland. The vessel carried a total of 904 service members.

Because German U-Boats were known to monitor sea lanes, and because Coast Guard sonar detected submarine activity in the area the convoy would travel through, the ship’s captain Hans J. Danielsen ordered the ship’s crew to be on high alert. This included orders for the men to sleep in their clothing and keep their life jackets on most of the time. Due to the heat deep in the ship’s hold, many men disregarded these orders and slept without clothes. Many also opted not to wear their life jackets due to how bulky and uncomfortable these were.

On Feb. 3, 1943, at 12:55 a.m., German submarine U-223 torpedoed the Dorchester off the coast of Newfoundland. This blow knocked out the ship’s electrical system. As darkness set in, so did panic, as many men were trapped below decks. In the midst of this chaos, the chaplains worked together to try and instill calm and also help as many men as they could. This cooperation was deemed extraordinary at the time due to the four being from such different backgrounds and beliefs.

There are numerous eye-witness accounts of the four chaplains’ heroism. When the supply of life jackets ran out before each man had one, the chaplains removed their own life jackets and gave them to others. The chaplains also helped as many men as they could into lifeboats.

Petty Officer John J. Mahoney recalled that, when he attempted to reenter his cabin to retrieve his gloves for protection against the Arctic cold, Rabbi Goode stopped him, said, “Never mind. I have two pairs,” and gave Mahoney gloves. The petty officer later realized the sacrifice Rabbi Goode had made: the rabbi had not had two pairs of gloves, but given his only gloves to Mahoney with the intention to remain on the Dorchester.

As he floated in the frigid Arctic water, surrounded by debris, oil, and dead bodies, Pvt. William B. Bednar heard “men crying, pleading, praying. I could also hear the chaplains preaching courage. Their voices were the only thing that kept me going.”

Grady Clark, another survivor, said, “As I swam away from the ship, I looked back. The flares had lighted everything. The bow came up high and she slid under. The last thing I saw, the four chaplains were up there praying for the safety of the men. They had done everything they could. I did not see them again. They themselves did not have a chance without their life jackets.” The four then linked arms, said prayers, and sang hymns as they went down with the ship.

Because the water temperature was 34 degrees and the air temperature was 36 degrees, hundreds of men died due to hypothermia before rescue ships came. Of the 904 men aboard the ship, only 230 were rescued.

Posthumous Medals

On Dec. 19, 1944, Congress posthumously awarded each of the chaplains the Purple Heart and the Distinguished Service Cross. Congress also attempted to posthumously confer the Medal of Honor on each chaplain. However, because the chaplains had acted after the torpedo attack was over, and this medal required heroism performed “under fire,”  they did not technically qualify. In response, members of Congress authorized the Four Chaplains’ Medal, a special medal intended to have the same weight and importance as the Medal of Honor. It was approved by a unanimous act of Congress on July 14, 1960, and Secretary of the Army Wilber M. Brucker presented the medals to the next of kin of each chaplain at Ft. Myer, Virginia on Jan. 18, 1961.

Observances, Honors, Foundations, and Memorials

Today, there are numerous honors dedicated to the four chaplains. This is not an exhaustive list, but rather represents a portion of those honors.

Four Chaplains Day

In 1988, Congress established Feb. 3rd as an annual “Four Chaplains Day.” Observations vary from state to city. Politicians issue official proclamations, and, at times, flags fly at half-staff. Numerous military groups, civilian groups, and organizations also hold ceremonies and observances. The American Legion also holds commemorative services and programs at many posts throughout the nation.

Memorial Service to Commemorate Four Chaplains Day

Held on or close to Feb. 3, four chaplains memorial services are often multi-faith. Typical symbols to represent the four chaplains include four candles, pictures of each chaplain, or four easels each holding a life jacket.

Four Chaplains Commemorative Stamp

A commemorative stamp for the chaplains was designed by Louis Schwimmer, the head of the Art Department of the New York branch of the U.S. Post Office Department, and issued in 1948. Until 2011, stamps were usually only issued for a president at least 10 years after his death, which makes this stamp exceptional.

Chapel of the Four Chaplains

On Feb. 3, 1951, President Harry S. Truman dedicated the Chapel of the Four Chaplains in the basement of Grace Baptist church in Philadelphia. In his dedication speech, President Truman said, “This interfaith shrine… will stand through long generations to teach Americans that as men can die heroically as brothers so should they live together in mutual faith and goodwill.”

The Four Chaplains Memorial Foundation

Housed at the former Naval Chapel at the decommissioned South Philadelphia Navy Yard, the Four Chaplains Memorial Foundation is the only national 501(c)(3) charity related to the Four Chaplains’ legacy.  The foundation was founded by the chaplains’ families and survivors of the Dorchester tragedy, including 3 survivors of U-boat 223, who were transported to the US as POWs on the Queen Mary one year after the Dorchester attack. The foundation’s official mission statement is “to further the cause of unity without uniformity,” and it achieves this mission through a variety of activities:

  • Awards to honor individuals whose deeds symbolize the legacy of the four chaplains.
  • Support for memorial services that honor the memory of the chaplains.
  • Publication of the Guidelines for Four Chaplains Interfaith Memorial Services.
  • Sponsors for an “Emergency Chaplains Corps” to provide support for first responders in disaster situations.
  • Scholarship competitions for graduating high school seniors, focusing on the values of “inclusion, cooperation, and unity” exemplified by the Four Chaplains story. This includes a National Art Scholarship contest, a National Essay Scholarship contest, and a National Project Lifesaver Scholarship contest.

Additional honors for the four chaplains include:

  • Stained glass windows at the Pentagon, the National Cathedral, and West Point
  • The Immortal Chaplains Memorial Sanctuary on the Queen Mary in Long Beach, California, which is operated by The Immortal Chaplains Foundation
  • Memorial sculptures, such as the Brotherhood Memorial in the Cleveland Cultural Gardens, and the Memorial at Arbor Crest Cemetery, created by sculptor Carlton W. Angell, dedicated to the Four Chaplains in Ann Arbor, Michigan in 1954
  • “Field of the Four Chaplains” at Fort Benning, Georgia
  • Four Chaplains Monument in Bottineau, North Dakota

The U.S. Army observes U.S. federal holidays and typically authorizes a training holiday to coincide with each federal holiday to provide four-day weekends. These are called days of no-scheduled activity, or DONSAs, and can be impacted by training and mission requirements. Always confirm with your chain of command if you will have these or other days off.

Holiday Season/Holiday Block Leave

During the two weeks around the end-of-year holidays, the armed forces typically remain operational (half or full-day schedule based on mission requirements), except for Christmas and New Year’s days off and designated training holidays.

Army “Christmas Exodus”

The Army typically shuts down basic training and advanced individual training schools. The Navy and Air Force typically shut down job schools but do not shut down basic training.

The 10-day break generally starts a week before Christmas and lasts until a week after Christmas. The “exodus” allows drill sergeants and basic training staff members to spend the holidays with their families.

Soldiers may choose whether to take a break and go home or stay at basic training and work on details during the 10-day period. Any taken leave comes out of soldiers’ leave entitlement, and transportation costs home and back are not covered, according to a 2014 explanation from the U.S. Army Future Soldier Center.

Air Force 2025 Air Education and Training Command Family Days

  • Friday, May 23, 2025
  • Thursday, June 19, 2025

Most offices on Air Force installations are closed on these days, and some services, including medical, recreation, shopping, and dining, are on restricted schedules. Many installations will close some gates as well. Check with your local installation for details. For military members required to perform duty during these holidays, commanders are encouraged to grant compensatory time off during the first week following the holiday, mission requirements permitting, according to a 2022 Air Force memo.

Update: According to the Social Security Administration (SSA), the 2025 Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) will rise 2.5%. The lower increase rate signifies that inflation is cooling in the U.S. following nearly three years of higher-than-average COLA increases.

In 2024, COLA increased 3.2%. The increase was smaller than 2022 and 2023, but is a result of lowering inflation across the U.S. That trend is reflected in the 2025 COLA rate as well.

COLA rate increases impact between 70-75 million people receiving Social Security and Supplemental Security Income benefits.

2025 COLA Payment Information

  • Retired military veterans, VA disability pay recipients, and surviving family members receiving VA benefit compensation will see pay increases effective Dec. 2, 2024.
  • Updated Social Security benefits will begin with December benefits, which are paid out in January of 2025.
  • Updated federal Social Security Insurance (SSI) payments will start on Dec. 31, 2024.

New Medicare premium increases for 2025 will also be released soon. However, 2024 Medicare premium rates are available

Individuals and Programs Impacted by COLA

How COLA Is Determined

The Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Consumer Price Index (CPI-W) determines COLA increases. It is based on the percentage increase of the CPI-W from the third quarter of the previous year versus the current year’s third quarter (July, August and September).

Veterans who retire during the current calendar year will receive a temporary partial COLA because they already received a military pay raise in January.

ChristmasThe Holiday season can be particularly difficult for military personnel and their families who are separated by deployment or simply struggling financially.  The stress and hardship of deployment can create an incredibly lonesome holiday setting for both personnel abroad and their families holding the fort at home. In addition, many families who are blessed and able to spend the holiday together can experience hardships with the added financial burden that Christmas brings to many each year.

Christmas will be celebrated on Thursday, Dec. 25th, 2025.

Christmas has deep roots in our nation’s sense of tradition and celebration.  When combined with military efforts, there is a strong presence of strength, unity, and cheer that permeates all American families, unifying both military and non-military families with an awareness of the spirit of giving and hope.

U.S. Troops Serving Overseas This Christmas

Service members serve on all seven continents — there is one service member in Antarctica — and on all the seas. Military personnel serve in more than 170 countries.

Sailors will man their ships from the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Mexico. Navy officials maintain that roughly a third of the Navy is deployed at any one time.

Air Force missileers and airmen are in the silos, by the planes and in the command centers ensuring the nuclear system is ready if needed.

History of Christmas in the Military

Christmas has long been celebrated in the military, even in times of war. Perhaps the most famous celebration of Christmas in the military is the Christmas Truce of 1914. Starting on Christmas Eve, troops on both the British and German sides began singing Christmas Carols to one another. The sounds of guns and cannons faded along the Western Front in Belgium and were replaced by holiday celebrations, albeit cautious ones, in the trenches. The Germans initiated this temporary “truce” and began with the singing of carols and placement of Christmas trees along the trenches.  On Christmas morning, German soldiers emerged unarmed, calling out “Merry Christmas” to the Allied British soldiers in the trenches across no-man’s-land.

This gesture of goodwill between enemies came a mere five months after the outbreak of war in Europe, and is perhaps the last example of the concept of chivalry between enemies in warfare.  This notion of goodwill between enemies was never again repeated, as future similar attempts were promptly squashed with threats of discipline from squad leaders. Even a world war could not destroy the Christmas spirit.

Christmas Military Traditions and Charitable Actions

The military has a long-standing reputation for watching out for its own, and providing excellent assistance to the needs of families in a wide variety of variable situations. Military families often band together, particularly when a member is deployed, to form a strong support system that lifts spirits and builds emotional strength in a time of uncertainty. By connecting with squadron friends and their families, military families can experience the warm Christmas spirit and fun-filled holidays, growing various traditions throughout each holiday season.

Military families can benefit greatly from traditions, and this can drastically help in lessening the longing for a family member who is deployed abroad. Ideas for traditions include: a countdown calendar, a neighborhood light tour, Christmas Eve pajamas, cookie parties, ornament decoration, and holiday parades. Even the smallest tradition can provide a family with a valuable pillar of hope and comfort during the holidays.

Charitable organizations are especially prominent during the holiday season, providing valuable support and resources for military families in need.  The following are a few fantastic resources for charitable organizations that provide help to military personnel and their families:

The National Guard includes the Army National Guard and the Air National Guard. These two components have a mission to equip, train, and deploy when needed in emergencies for contingencies around the world.

The National Guard Birthday will be observed on Friday, Dec. 13, 2024.

The Air National Guard will be observed on Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2024.

What It Means To Be Part of The National Guard

Whether serving in the Army National Guard or the Air National Guard, the nature of service involves a concept some call being a “citizen soldier.” They are also known as a “citizen airman” which means that Guard members have joined the military with its responsibilities and privileges. They also maintain a civilian job and a life outside the active duty military world.

National Guard members have been labeled “weekend warriors” or “part-time” soldiers and airmen. The role of the Guard should not be taken for granted in the larger scheme of homeland security, global military operations, or the war on terror.

The end of the first Operation Desert Storm led to a serious reconsideration of how Guard and Reserve forces could be used to augment active duty missions. This brought the reshaping of the work and deployment of these part-time forces.

Being a member of the National Guard means being ready to put civilian careers on hold to train, deploy, and serve. The role that “weekend warriors” play in the full-time Army and Air Force work done around the world is a crucial part of the Defense Department’s planning for such operations.

Since the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, more than 650,000 National Guard members have been called on to serve at home and abroad.

The National Guard Birthday: Dec. 13, 1636

The birthday of the National Guard may surprise you. The National Guard official site lists the official date as Dec. 13, 1636.

That is no misprint. The date the Massachusetts colonial legislature authorized a consolidation of the colony’s militias into three regiments was indeed on Dec. 13, 1636.

This date is used as part of a Defense Department tradition of using the date on the legislation officially recognizing an active or reserve component’s existence.

Later, the Militia Act of May 8, 1792 authorized military units formed before the Act to retain “customary privileges.” Over 100 years later, the Militia Act of 1903 plus the National Defense Act of 1916 with other laws, the original Militia Act has been perpetuated.

The National Guard: Older Than the United States Army

There are four United States Army units considered direct descendants of the 1636 reorganization. The units are the following:

  • 101st Engineer Battalion
  • 101st Field Artillery Regiment
  • 181st Infantry Regiment
  • 182nd Infantry Regiment

All four belong to the Massachusetts Army National Guard.

The Air National Guard’s Army Heritage

Like the Air Force, the Air National Guard has its roots in the U.S. Army. Military flying missions have their genesis in the Army Signal Corps. This included military balloon operations and later the first military heavier-than-air powered flights.

The Air Force became a separate branch of military service via the National Security Act of 1947. It wasn’t long before the existing National Guard Army Air Force units began operations under the command of the newly minted United States Air Force.

The official birth date of the Air National Guard as a reserve component of the Air Force is Sept. 18, 1947.

The National Guard official site says the new branch of service inherited 59 aviation units. This included a significant number of original squadrons that were activated in 1940. The final transfer from the Army to the Air Force was finalized in 1948.

The oldest Air National Guard Unit is the New York 102nd Rescue Squadron. It was originally designated the Aero Company, Signal Corps in 1915.

The 102nd is not the oldest continually serving unit in the Air National Guard. That distinction goes to the 109th Airlift Squadron of the Minnesota Air National Guard. It was created as the 109th Observation Squadron in 1921.

Celebrating the Birthday of The National Guard

Similar to many other military observances, the birthday of the National Guard is not a national holiday, a bank holiday, or a special day off on the federal calendar. Yet Guard units around the world make a point to honor this special day. One of the most common activities to celebrate is with a National Guard Birthday cake cutting ceremony.

Tradition requires this ceremony to involve the oldest member of the celebrating Guard unit cutting the cake together with the youngest member. This is similar to the cake cutting tradition found at Army Dining-Out ceremonies, the Air Force Ball, and many other events where military heritage is an important part of the proceedings.

Some Guard units may celebrate on the local level with open houses, recruitment drives, charity work, or other community involvement.

Some governors may make an official proclamation or continue the tradition of proclamations on this day honoring the sacrifices and accomplishments of Guard members. Memorial observances for those who have died on duty are also a way to honor Dec. 13 each year.

You can get involved in an effort to support Guard members celebrate the National Guard birthday. You can make yourself available as a current or former Guard member by contacting your local National Guard office or a Veteran Service Organization (VSO) such as the Disabled American Veterans (DAV), Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), or Wounded Warrior Project.
